WI (Work Instructions)

← Back to the glossary index

Work instructions link vessel planning, yard management and depot operations. They guide crane operators, yard tractors and terminal trucks from the moment a box is discharged at the quay, through stacking in the yard, to loading on a vessel, rail wagon or truck. Clear instructions help control equipment usage, avoid clashes and keep berth windows on schedule.

Modern terminals generate and track work instructions inside a cloud-based TOS integrated with ERP and transport systems. Using IoT, GPS and RFID, the TOS assigns tasks to cranes or container trailers, monitors execution in real time and updates container status and position automatically.

  • Work instruction: Step-by-step guideline for handling a container move.
  • Equipment: Quay cranes, yard cranes, terminal trucks, trailers and RFID readers.
  • Depot management: Uses work instructions to keep stacks organized and moves optimized.
  • Berth planning: Relies on accurate, timely instructions to maximize quay productivity.

Consistent use of structured work instructions reduces delays, improves equipment utilization and supports safer, more predictable container terminal operations.
